You know when and how to upgrade your phone; here’s how to upgrade yourself.

Over the years, I have read countless books, taken workshops and courses, hired coaches and been on retreats. The most radically powerful and juicy idea I have come across, is a change of identity.

Identity is described by James Clear in Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones as what you believe. Changing your identity therefore is “changing your beliefs, assumptions and biases: your worldview, your self-image, your judgements about yourself and others.

Your behaviours are usually a reflection of your identity. What you do is an indication of the person you believe that you are — either consciously or nonconsciously.”

It is reminiscent of Seth Godin’s idea that people’s behaviour is inspired by the desire to do what “people like us” do. This is critical to successful marketing: “People like us do things like this”.

“More than features, more than benefits, we are driven to become a member in good standing of the tribe. We want to be respected by those we aspire to connect with, we want to know what we ought to do to be part of that circle.

Not the norms of mass, but the norms of our chosen tribe.”

Seth Godin
