Marianne Williamson summed it up perfectly when she wrote,

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.”

We long to belong from an early age and this very human need influences most of the decisions we are making, from our studies, our work, the way we dress, where we live, the shows we watch and even the food we eat and the beverages we drink.

Our choices are not so much personal as ones made by someone we aspire to be like. We think we are making decisions of our own free will but in truth, we are being influenced by the image of ourselves they will help us portray.

Even the rebels, the goths, the hippies, the activists, the lifestyle nomads, join a tribe to which they want to belong and make decisions accordingly. Very few people truly create their own path.

As Coco Chanel said,

“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself.”

As long as wanting to belong acts as a catalyst for thriving in work and society, it becomes a strength and…
